History of Durham New Homes and Durham Real Estate:
Durham was founded in 1853 by a country physician named
Bartlett Durham who lived and practiced throughout the
greater Durham and RTP metropolitan areas. In Durham's
early days the town was centered around the "Bull Durham
Tobacco Company". The name "Bull Durham" had been taken
from the bull on the British Coleman's Mustard, which
was being manufactured in Durham, England. The rapid
growth and prosperity of the Bull Durham Tobacco
Company, and Washington Duke's Duke & Sons Tobacco
Company, created rapid growth for the city of Durham,
North Carolina. Much of the early Durham homes and city
architecture, both commercial and residential, dates
from the period of 1890 - 1930.
Trinity College, was established in Durham NC in 1892,
and was transformed into Duke University in 1924 on a
large endowment from James B. Duke to honor his father,
Washington Duke. The original campus of Trinity College
would become the Women's College, and a new campus was
built in the forest west of Durham. Durham did not
experience the same early increases in new homes and new housing development as did neighboring
Raleigh and Cary. Durham new homes and residential
growth began to occur again in the 1980s, as Durham home
builders constructed multiple new Durham Homes and
Durham housing developments in the southern part of
Durham, adjacent to Research Triangle Park, new homes
growth and downtown development
became revitalized. A new downtown baseball stadium was
constructed for the Durham Bulls in 1994, and a
large-scale historic renovation of the American Tobacco
Company, near the Bull Durham baseball complex began in
2003.
Law and government
Durham NC operates under a council-manager government.
